Checkmate Sea Energy are developers of the Anaconda Wave Energy Converter, an innovative flexible solution to wave energy harvesting. Checkmate Sea Energy have been working on R&D of the Anaconda system since 2009, however a significant update to the Lobe-Tendon Anaconda in 2020 has reinvigorated development with a small but committed team. This role gives the opportunity to join the team and have a big impact on the development of the Lobe-Tendon Anaconda.

Job title: Wave Energy Engineer
The Role:

We are looking for an engineer to join our team to contribute to the next development stage of the Lobe-Tendon Anaconda. There is some flexibility in the role. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to at least two of the following:

  • Development and use of numerical modelling tools of the Anaconda wave energy converter dynamics; including waves, moorings, structure, internal fluids, power take-off, control and co-design

  • Systems engineering activities

  • Design and testing of a scale model of the Anaconda in a wave tank, along with analysis and reporting of the test results

  • Grant proposal writing


The role is initially for a maximum of 18 months from 1st October 2025 to 31st March 2027. The ideal candidate will work full time (37.5 hours per week), but we are open to applications for part time work. Please state in your cover letter if you wish to apply as full-time or part-time. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates based in Southwest Wales.


Responsibilities:
  • Development of numerical modelling tools for analysis of the Lobe-Tendon Anaconda including documentation, validation, testing and version control

  • Use of numerical modelling tools for analysis and optimisation of the Lobe-Tendon Anaconda

  • Requirements capture and analysis of potential solutions across the full system lifecycle

  • Analysis and reporting of experimental test data and numerical model results

  • Presentation of results to internal and external stakeholders

  • Contributing to grant proposal writing


Requirements:

Essential

  • A good first degree in engineering or related discipline

  • Capable of working independently, with a high degree of initiative and motivation

  • Strong remote collaboration skills, including proactive communication

  • Good time-management and associated effective prioritisation of tasks.

  • Good communication skills; across oral, written and presentation

  • Strong motivation to work in marine renewable energy


Desirable

  • A PhD/EngD or equivalent industry experience in marine renewables or related industry

  • Knowledge of numerical modelling of marine renewable energy systems

  • Experience in programming language (Python, MATLAB or equivalent) and best practice

  • Proficient in use of FEA software (Abaqus, Code Aster or equivalent)

  • Experience in use of BEM tools (Nemoh, WAMIT or equivalent)

  • Knowledge of the system engineering lifecycle and experience of systems engineering activities in industry

  • Experience in experimental testing of marine energy systems


Benefits:

  • Salary £32,000 – £45,000 per annum based on experience
